The Rococo style (also called Rococco and, in French, Rocaille) is the most opulent, intentionally excessive version of the Louis XV form. It is characterized by exaggerated curves and extensive carving, sculpting, and ornamentation, most commonly including scrolls, seashells (fauna) and acanthus leaves (flora).

Exceptional, Venetian, Rococo period, Lacca Povera commode scriban

The rectangular top above the slant-front, opening to a writing surface with a central pigeonhole flanked by four short drawers, above the serpentine-fronted body with two long drawers, the paneled sides, raised on cabriole legs.

Lacca Povera (also known as "Lacca Contrafatta") was a form of art originating in Venice incorporating decoupage (the cutting out of figural or natural forms), which are adhered to a solid surface, painted and hand-engraved, and then covered with a layer of layer of lacquer.

In solid, carved giltwood. One of the period (mid-18th century), the other later (19th century). Each having six legs elegantly carved with shells, acanthus leaves, and pomegranates.

Created for le Château de Dampierre, a castle in Dampierre-en-Yvelines, in the Vallée de Chevreuse, France.

Provenance: Formerly part of the furnishings at The Audubon House, Key West, FL; previously on exhibition at the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Miami, FL.

Sculpted in solid Carrara marble as a large shell supported by a child satyr and a putto upon a naturalistic base with integral foliate and shell-carved circular base. Circa 1850.

In sculpted and blue-painted wood with gold accents, the lower part of arbalette form with a single, central drawer, top in faux marble, the legs of cabriole form; the upper part having a mirror with original mercury glass supported by two arms; the whole being of curvilinear form with a floral and shell motif. Circa 1850.
